Camplong lies at the heart of the Corbières hills at 110 metres above sea level, nestling at the foot of the Montagne d’Alaric. In former times, the village was a possession of the Abbey at Lagrasse. Nowadays there are 270 inhabitants.
The
south-facing vineyards are spread across the gravelly slopes looking over the
Orbieu Valley.
95% of the 250 hectares of vines are classified AOC Corbières, Terroir de Lagrasse. They produce 12,000 hectolitres of Corbières red, rosé and white annually.
The wines produced are certified “Terra Vitis”, sustainable agriculture. The winery shop is open all year, every day except Sunday.
Still harvesting by hand, still independent, still Odile Denat in charge, and still beautiful wines, full-bodied and flavorsome. The AOC Corbières red Fontbories 2006 (6.50€) was our preference 18/20 : a nose of black fruits, humus, tobacco, beeswax, and just a little musky; substantial red body, generous and straightforward, built on a web of textured tannins. A delight with roast beef, duck, wild boar. More ambitious, the cuvée C de Camplong 2006 (15/20, 17,50€) mainly Syrah, matured for 14 months in new oak barrels is still something for the future. Full-bodied, suave, sappy, with the taste of very ripe red berries and leather, it nevertheless has a remarkable potential. So a little bit of patience before you serve it with roast duck or a lamb couscous.
It is notable that since 2002 all the vineyards have been worked according to the techniques of “sustainable agriculture”, and amongst the score of vine growers involved, some are seriously considering converting to organic, which would be a leap forwards for this vigorous winery, which exports 40% of its production.
A tasty titbit, their Corbières Peyres Nobles rosé 2007, has a silver medal from the Concours général agricole 2008. Bright and clear, with a floral nose and a touch of raspberry, it is a real winner like the Corbières Peyres Nobles white 2007. The Corbières Fontbories red 2006, exclusively harvested by hand, has a silver medal. It is solid, with a nose composed of woody undergrowth and cherry, associating finesse and structure with tannins which are both rich and full of flavour.

This is a modestly-sized cooperative is spread over the Lagrasse and Alaric terroirs. Directed by Odile Denat, the winery has benefitted from the support of winemakers Michel Tardieu and Dominique Laurent, notably for the ‘ C’. The total rethinking of the winemaking process has allowed them to produce fine oenologically-irreprochable wines. The wines in the Peyres Nobles range make good everyday drinking.
The Cave des Vignerons de Camplong … has for some years distinguished itself by the quality of certain high-quality wines (the cuvée C)

Camplong Fontbories 2006**
This cooperative, created in 1932, brings together 32 growers with a total of 300 ha of vines. It makes two wines of high quality, including this Fontbories 2006**, with an intense, elegent, slightly spicy nose of quinces and cherries. In the mouth it is just as good, with a hint of licorice, vanilla and fruits confits and with subtle, soft tanins. A perfectly conceived wine. The C de Camplong Red 2005*, thick, silky, powerful, gains one star.
15.5/20 :
