Grape varieties in the Corbières - carignan, grenache, syrah, cinsault, mourvedre The winery of the Vignerons de Camplong AOC Corbières wines

Vignerons de Camplong

Camplong lies at the heart of the Corbières hills at 110 metres above sea level, nestling at the foot of the Montagne d’Alaric. In former times, the village was a possession of the Abbey at Lagrasse. Nowadays there are 270 inhabitants.

The south-facing vineyards are spread across the gravelly slopes looking over the Orbieu Valley.

95% of the 250 hectares of vines are classified AOC Corbières, Terroir de Lagrasse. They produce 12,000 hectolitres of Corbières red, rosé and white annually.

The wines produced are certified “Terra Vitis”, sustainable agriculture. The winery shop is open all year, every day except Sunday.

Guide Dussert-Gerber des Vins de France 2005

The winery groups a dozen young vine growers and 50 owners, with 25 ha in appellation controlée Corbières. One can taste the C de Camplong 2001, aged in oak barrels, with its deep colour, a marriage of finesse and concentrated flavours. Smooth on the tongue, this is a generous wine with a complex nose of spices and mountain herbs.

The Cuvée des Vignerons 2001 is made from selected grapes from vineyards on the southern slopes of the montagne d'Alaric, which gives it a nose of blackcurrent and spices, powerful and long, with well-blended tannins and a pleasant finish.

The Fontbories red, aged in oak barrels, is all colour, aromatic, with subtle notes of sour cherries and cinamon.

Try also the Peyres Nobles red 2002, perfumed with cooked fruit and spices, rich and deeply coloured, ruby red, dense and powerful to the nose and in the mouth. The Peyres Nobles rosé 2002, and the Peyres Nobles white are hits. Don’t hesitate.

C. DE CAMPLONG 2001
A deep cherry robe. The nose speaks of red fruits, prunes, wood flavours, spices and ripeness. In the mouth, the wine is smooth, full and powerful with the flavours of black fruits, chocolate and spices. A long finish, strong and bitter.

A Corbières to lay down.

Guide Hachette 2005

C DE CAMPLONG 2001*

The name, the label, everything makes one think of haute couture, of perfumes. This is a prestigeous vintage made from carignan, syrah, grenache and mourvèdre. In a few words: deep ruby tones, wild cherries and moorland herbs, relatively discretely oaked (14 months in wood), a spicy wine, liquorice, rich in tannin, dense and harmonious. The little note of bitterness on swallowing is not unpleasant. It will be at its best in 2-3 year's time. Until then, to be served in a caraffe.

Two other wines have also been selected: the Peyres Nobles rose and white 2003.

Guide Bettane & Desseauve 2005

Red : 237 hectares. Carignan 38 %, Grenache 27%, Syrah 22%, Mourvèdre 8%, Cinsault 5%.
White : 13 hectares .Grenache 86% , Muscat 8%, Maccabeu 6%.

As at Embres et Castelmaure, the Camplong winegrowers have benefited from the support of Michel Tardieu and Dominique Laurent, and the complete rethinking of the way they work has allowed the creation of a complete range of sophisticated wine.

The wines: The star of this cooperative is indisputably the C de Camplong which has benefited from the advice of Tardieu and Laurent. This wine is full and rich, with sophisticated aromas, and a good length. The other wines are more influenced by the carignan and have a certain homliness, but the whole range is very honourable, like, for example, the affordable Peyres Nobles: a simple success.
